Dry Skin Rescue, how to combat Dry and Dehydrated Skin

Dry Skin Rescue, how to combat Dry and Dehydrated Skin

Causes of dry skin

Our skin becomes dry and thirsty for moisture all year round due to a variety of environmental means; from living in cities with high pollution levels, drastic temperature changes in winter with central heating, and although it is vital our skin sees natural daylight, excessive amounts of sun exposure or high winds will have a damaging impact on our skin. All of these factors will contribute to impurities leaving our skin dry and dull looking.

Dry skin or dehydrated skin?

We need to differentiate between the skin type “dry skin” and the skin condition “dehydrated skin”. “Dry skin” results from the skin not having or producing enough sebum or natural oils, as opposed to the “normal skin type”, where the oils produced are just right, and “oily skin type”, where too much oil or sebum is produced by the skin naturally. Oily skin is more often experienced by younger people starting in their teens, while the more we age, the drier our skin becomes.

The dehydrated skin condition is instead caused by not having enough water in the top layer of the skin, the so-called stratum corneum.

Can dehydrated skin be caused by not drinking enough water?

Our hydration intake has a huge effect on our skin’s elasticity, natural lustre and healthy shine.

In order to keep our hydration intake up, it is paramount that we drink enough water as we know, but often forget. The best way to do this is to sip lukewarm to hot water throughout the day, rather than sudden bursts of large quantities of ice-cold water, as your body will then struggle to digest and will create toxic build up as well as leaving your skin dry. By drinking warm water throughout the day, it will help to improve circulation and eliminate toxins from the body and encourage the natural flow of the lymph system.

Can any other liquid intake help avoid dehydrated skin?

Other ways to hydrate are by eating more liquid-based foods: soups and stews. Herbal teas are great or just pop a sprig of rosemary, thyme or sage in boiled water and you will have a flavoured hot drink. This way, you will also absorb the natural essential oils from the herbs and will benefit from their healing properties at the same time! On long summer days, try infusing drinking water by simply adding a few slices of orange and a couple of basil leaves or other soft herbs for a refreshing drink. When you absorb sufficient water, your entire body will cleanse and you will notice your skin, hair, eyes and lips will look and feel healthier. Blemishes on your face will start to clear and your whole body will become less dry and you will see a natural glow on your skin. You will also feel fresher and more energised!

Other tips to avoid dehydrated skin.

There are also things that we recommend not to do, in order to avoid dehydrated skin:

  • Avoiding caffeine and alcoholic beverages is important. Remember that caffeine is contained in teas as well, except for herbal teas.
  • Using an exfoliant on the skin that is too abrasive can irritate the skin. You will be able to feel when a scrub becomes too harsh on your skin. We suggest to try a small sample before committing to a full size, when picking your face exfoliant.

What Terre Verdi products we offer to combat dry skin.

We offer a few products to keep dry skin at bay, both for the morning, during the day, and for the evening routine for face, as well as we have a couple of solutions for the body as well.

What we recommend in the morning to avoid dry skin.

After waking up in the morning, you naturally wash your face, it is the first thing that most of us do. Firstly, we recommend not to use harsh soaps, but only mild cleansers. As soon as we finish patting dry, our NeroliPom Moisturiser can be applied in circular motions. This will ensure that the moisture will be locked in the skin for longer, as well as will help protect from the damaging environmental exposure.

Is the body’s skin also in need of specific products to combat dryness?

Yes, the body needs specific products as well to fight signs of dryness. Right after the shower or bath, the skin of the body needs to be replenished of the lost lipids or oils, and the PH of the skin restored.
